when it's cold like this and everyone's blabbing on about the patriots (boooring), i miss my boys so much. today, when i opened the herald i was greeted with such a lovely surprise. a big fat picture of my boyfriend jason varitek, who was apparently (ahem, rightfully) given the boston baseball writers' award for most valuable player of 2003. bout time, i say. [the herald called him "log-legged", my new favorite epithet.] if you hold the 2003 red sox as dear in your heart as i do, you OWE IT to yourself to hightail it to store24 in allston (near the model) and buy yourself a dvd copy of "cowboy up: the wild ride of the 2003 boston red sox". quite possibly, the best $20 i've ever spent. i watched said dvd rapt, grinning, dreading, and eventually out-and-out sobbing, as it took me through the greatest season of baseball i've ever experienced in my life. it's all there: "the incident"; johnny's injury; mueller's two grand slams from opposite sides of the plate in the same game; karaoke guy; ortiz' loveable monsterlike quality; varitek's rise to greatness; nomar's slump; trotter throwing the ball into the stands with only two outs; my 15 minutes "behind home plate" (seriously i'm in the video!); manny's punishment; breathtaking pitching; and gorgeous hit after hit after hit after hit. i bought one for myself and one for my daddy, because i owe my love of baseball directly to him. the words "this is a gift that keeps on giving" were meant for this dvd. buy it, and you get all the moments that made us cherish the 2003 red sox like they were (are) our family. i miss the boys. my dad swears this is the year we go down to spring training and see a game or two. all i know is that i heard it's VERY EASY to meet players when you are down there. that's all interactive and shit. all i know is if i meet any of them, i'll be as they say "like a pig in shit". the most disgusting simile ever...
